Commanded by Captain Gabriel de Campos y Pineda, the ship departed Veracruz, Mexico, on January 11, 1784, and vanished before reaching its destination. Historical Impact: Because the silver never arrived to stabilize the territory, Spain eventually ceded Louisiana back to France in 1801, which subsequently enabled the United States to complete the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.

Finding the Wreck: On August 2, 1993, a fishing trawler named Mistake, captained by Jerry Murphy from Pascagoula, Mississippi, snagged its net in the Gulf of Mexico about fifty miles south of New Orleans and hauled up a deckload of 1783 silver Spanish coins. Recovery: The wreck was located in roughly 300 feet of water, and the recovered silver coins were eventually cataloged, graded, and sold to collectors
